Curriculum

Curriculum Statement

Learning for life, loving God

Ourselves and others

Valuing all of His creation

Enabling us to do our best

At St Margaret’s, and grounded in our mission statement we aim to ensure a high quality, broad and balanced curriculum which promotes children’s interest and enquiry and enables the children to grow and develop their learning by experiencing a wide range of opportunities, learning styles and subjects. We aim for every child to have the opportunity to learn effectively and to have their learning extended appropriately. We want the children when they leave St Margaret’s to have an excellent understanding of the social, moral and cultural aspects of the modern world, to be secure as unique individuals, know how to interact with others and be confident, independent and active learners.

At St Margaret’s the children enter Reception and are placed in 2 registration classes where they learn through play in child initiated - ‘Plan Do Review’ both inside the classroom and in the Early Years outdoor area and school grounds. They are taught in small groups for Phonics, English and Maths towards specific learning goals.

From Key Stage One the children are organised into 4 mixed age mixed ability registration classes and are grouped into 5 groups for English and Maths where they will be taught by their class teacher or any one of the teachers across the phase group.

In Key Stage Two the children are organised into  mixed age mixed ability registration classes and are grouped for English and Maths .

RE, Science, Computing, Writing, Comprehension and French are taught discretely across the school.

At Key Stage Two some subjects are ‘carouseled’ and children will be taught a different part of that carousel over three days eg PE, Computing and Creative Writing. This enables teacher specialisms to be used effectively and the appropriate use of resources such as the Hall for indoor PE.

The foundation subjects (History, Geography, Art, DT, Music) are usually taught in the afternoon and are planned as discrete subjects but are then linked via the Creative Curriculum with one subject leading the others as a ‘Major’ e.g History (Vikings) linked to Art and Geography during Term 1 in UKS2. This enables the children to explore and learn in depth through a range of media.

Children may also from time to time be part of specific learning groups eg Times tables, Handwriting.

All groups are formally reviewed at least 6 weekly to ensure we are offering the most appropriate learning for every child.

Each year we review how the timetables is arranged and  below is a sample timetable for each Phase Group:
